In cardiac surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, and during operations on other organs that require suturing for a long time, non-absorbable suture materials are used.
Such material will remain in the body indefinitely and painlessly, without causing discomfort to the patient. This means that it must have perfect compatibility with body tissues, not cause any reactions (allergic, toxic, carcinogenic, etc.), be chemically inert (so as not to undergo changes under the influence of tissue fluids). And also plastic, so that there is no tension when the fabric pulsates: such tensions can injure the fabric or lead to rupture of the thread if it is not elastic enough. In addition, the material should not grow together with the tissue, so that it can be freely removed at any time without consequences for the body.
All these
polypropylene possesses qualities - a monofilament suture material with a perfectly smooth surface (there are no irregularities on the surface of monofilament threads, which are inevitable when twisting or weaving material from several fibers). It has controlled linear stretch (returns to its original state after being stretched). In a vascular system that pulsates with every heartbeat, such plasticity is a necessary quality.
Polypropylene is chemically inert. No matter how long it stays in the body, it does not come into contact with tissues, there is no molecular exchange, it does not stick, does not coalesce. The thread can simply be pulled out, and it will come out painlessly.
The material is very convenient during operations, due to its smoothness and elasticity, its manipulation properties are close to ideal. Able to flatten - this gives a strong non-untied knot. The surface of the thread prevents the growth of bacteria, the thread can be used in operations with the possibility of subsequent infection, as well as for the treatment of infected wounds. Rejection by tissues and the occurrence of a ligature fistula (pathological formation due to suppuration of the ligature) are practically excluded. The thread is produced colorless or blue, of various lengths and diameters. There are modifications for atraumatic and any surgical needles of different sizes, as well as for ligatures (vessel ligation).
Contraindications for the use of the thread have not yet been identified.
Of the side effects, redness, short-term inflammatory processes around the seam are possible; if the thread is in a saline solution for a long time (biliary tract, bladder), stones may form, as in the case of any foreign body in these organs.
