The neonatal meconium aspirator (ASP) is intended for the aspiration of meconium in newborns.
In meconium aspiration syndrome, it is necessary to suck thick meconium not only from the nose and pharynx, but also from the trachea.
It is advisable to perform the operation before the newborn takes its first breath.
To do this, the newborn must be intubated, and the endotracheal tube is connected to an aspirator, which, in turn, must be connected to a vacuum source.
After the meconium is removed, the aspirator is disconnected and further actions depend on the condition of the newborn.
If the tube is patent, artificial ventilation may be continued.
In case of obstruction of the endotracheal tube, reintubation should be performed.
The patient may also be intubated for spontaneous breathing.
