Spinal anesthesia is a type of local anesthesia in which an anesthetic is injected into the subarachnoid space during a lumbar puncture, and the blocking of impulse transmission occurs at the level of the spinal nerve roots.
This type of anesthesia has a number of advantages compared to general anesthesia: low cost, anesthesia and respiratory equipment are not involved, observation in the post-anesthetic period is not required (after the operation, the patient can be returned immediately to the ward), fewer contraindications and potential complications. It does not affect the level of consciousness of the patient, therefore it is often combined with sedatives.
Spinal anesthesia can be performed in one of two positions of the patient - lying on his side and sitting.
Spinal anesthesia is performed in the same place as epidural anesthesia, but with some differences:
Immediately after injection into the subdural space of the anesthetic, a feeling of numbness quickly develops in the lower part of the body.
The Spinal Anesthesia Kit is designed to administer spinal anesthesia drugs into the subarachnoid space.
