This is a tube made of implantable non-toxic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane or silicone, which is inserted through the nasal passage into the esophagus and then immersed in the stomach. Modern probes are available in various lengths and diameters, for adults and children. Thanks to modern materials that are resistant to hydrochloric acid produced in the stomach, a nasogastric feeding tube can be used for 3 weeks if used correctly.
Most often, such probes are intended for enteral nutrition, i. for those cases when the patient cannot take food in the usual way. Although sometimes the probe is used for other purposes:
- decompression of the stomach with difficult withdrawal of its contents into the intestine,
- aspiration of stomach contents
- drug administration.
